Hi Everyone, I am back into trains and have been bitten by the DCS bug.

I bought a Never run MTH SD40-2 Item 20-2535-1. Ran like a champ when I got it now all of a sudden it derails around a corner? Track has not changed after 19 fuses am sick about it. If you turn it around it will run fine. Take the shell off will run forward all day long. Put shell back on will derail after 1 or 2 curves. Checked wheel gauge and one axle was off so set it to NMRA standard. No luck finally took front coupler off redid some wiring and put spring from coupler on front truck. Runs now ok but anyone know for sure what it would be. Was kind of mad that I redid all 3 things at once because of course now I dont know which one it was or maybe a culmination of all? Love this forum and DCS crazy to be able to run 2 trains at once and not have fear of will I make it to siding in time as to not crash into each other running all of Grandpas Post War stuff with ZW

Thanks in advance to all who will try and help me Eric

My experience is that for some engines and cars it does not take much for the offending truck wheel to start "climbing" the rail at a switch or turn. And in some cases that just may be the particular engine and track combination rather than a defect.

What is the engine length, track radius and track (Atlas, Fastrack, etc.) you are using?

Big E, that's a 17 1/2 inch long engine. Even though MTH Railking is 031 by default you are at the very limits of truck rotation -- I would think -- on an 031 curve. I have a couple 17 inch Williams engines that simply won't work on my Atlas 036 curves due to overhang. IMO consider yourself lucky that you were able to fix the problem.

Oops my bad, it is a Premier but the catalog does say 031. That's surprising for a larger Premier diesel. I have seen some that I really wanted to buy but the catalog said 042 curves. Still, the derail is not surprising for a long engine on tight curves. Makes it that much better that you were able to get it to work.

I had a an engine I wanted on eBay that said 031 in the catalog but the Seller listed as 042. I asked why the difference and he said he had some returns in the past for the same problem you're having. For my 036 layout I always check the engine length. If its greater than 15 inches or so I pass. Which is a bummer because there are some great engines -- like yours -- that I would like to run.

Hi Dave, this one is rated for 031 the new ones are not. It is built with the inside wheels having no flanges.

Also forgot to mention that it had clocked hundreds of miles on 027 curves until I redid track to 031. Just wish I knew because would like to put coupler back on but fuse budget is low right now...lol
