Hi All,

I had gone to a train show last year looking for N scale equipment and instead bought a Lionel 249 that I was told worked, but didn't and except for a working e-unit was unrepairable.  The first toy train i bought wound up being the first to go in the junk box.  Irregardless I was hooked on toy trains.  I found my wife's old Marx locomotive and a box car in the basement.  A neighbor gave me a circle of track and the train took off, flying around the circle. Magazines came next, then the forums, books on Lionel.  Our neighbor gave me his Lionel Ford set, he is more into G scale, so now there were two circles of track on the floor.  Trains on the floor are too big a temptation for a 2 year old who is obsessed with trains, so they had to be put away.  I needed a more permanent layout, one that would be out of reach but visible.

Yesterday, Sunday the 10th of February, my 13 year old son and I ventured out to the shop and built a table.  It came out beautifully.  Next came the track.  Hmm, no room for the transformers, I need another table for a control station.  Back to the shop.  Now that looks like a good beginning to a toy train layout.  4 X 6  36" tall.

I just ordered a Buddy from RMT.  I think an elevated track might be in order.

I really enjoy this forum.

Thank you.

Congratulations on you and your boys' new hobby. What a great way to bond with your sons. My sons are 28 and 31 now. When they were young they used to love to watch and run "Daddy's trains". Neither one is "into" toy trains right now. Although that does not stop them from picking out some nice items for me for my Birthday or for Christmas. Especially now that I am into Three Rail Scale O. It is nice to have someone else to pay the $45 to $60 for a scale proportioned freight car or caboose!! Enjoy your time with your boys now, the years go by WAY to fast.

Cobrabob.

You’ve got it Toy Train Guy! Those are the key words; Toy Trains and Enthusiasm. Your kids couldn’t have a dad with a better attitude.  It doesn’t matter how much you have as long as you have an imagination and the enthusiasm to keep playing with your toys.

I remember starting out 5 years ago with a brand new ready to run set given to me by my 80 yo ma. I only had for three days when she crashed it into the  sliding glass door while demonstrating it for a friend when I wasn’t around. She was so upset when I returned home and I couldn’t stop laughing thinking of the two old ladies playing with the toy trains.

I quickly replaced that RTR loco with the  Milwaukee SD18 which had no horn. So I improvised. I added the Mighty Sound Of Steam Milwaukee Special. Than I soon I improvised a mountain backdrop from my kite collection.

Eventually I improvised a road name and logo to match my Cheesy System.

Now I’ve moved up from my 4 X 5 display to 4 X 7 (50” x 86” actual dimensions). I’m still improvising and still having fun.

You don’t need a lot and things don’t always work like they should but as long as you have a little imagination, enthusiasm, and remember they are toys you’ll never need much else to enjoy the hobby. Your kids may not stick with trains as they age, but  I’m sure they’ll appreciate what you’ll teach them by sharing the hobby now.

My compliments on your attitude, you've got it right.
