It’s your lucky day! Why? You have a ticket to ride the Advanced Commodore Vanderbilt from Chicago to New York City behind one of the New York Central’s mighty 4-8-4 Niagaras of course! In real life S1b #6014 was built by the American Locomotive Company but this one is from the MTH Electric Trains Premier Line. As is the five car heavyweight passenger cars and RPO. Pay attention during the ride as you will notice some newly laid Brennan’s Better Ballast and a few new buildings.

If this locomotive looks familiar to you it may be because it spent a considerable amount of time on the Stockyard Express Central Railroad. It is featured in two videos for the store.

2 Rail versions of these are indeed rare. I know that mine does have a 2-rail/3-rail switch on it so it can be converted. Glad you enjoyed the video! It is one of my favorite locomotives.

Thanks! I was unsure at first about adding ballast to FasTrack but then I decided why not try it. Brennan's Ballast is really nice to work with and it adds a whole new level of realism.

Adam;

As an NYC fan, love the Niagara (I have the old Lionel Century Club one around somewhere). I don't know why, but I've always liked the look of the "elephant ears"! And your layout is pretty impressive. The ballast does look very realistic and does go well with the Fastrack. Could you tell me what you used to secure the ballast to the layout? I am getting to the point on my own first layout where I will need to start with some scenic work, and that ballast looks like a great way to go.

Thanks.

1. The ballast is from Brennan's Model Railroading. First I paint the edges of the Fastrack and the a little of the around the track bed with white glue. Then I immediately use a spoon to sprinkle the ballast onto the glued areas. Once it all drys it is pretty much set but I may go over it all again with wash of diluted glue just to get the loose stuff down.

2. Unfortunately I would have to agree with MTH on the statement of never making a RailKing Niagara. It would be costly and would not sell as well as other RailKing engines. If a real Niagara had been saved and was operating I could see it happening but that is not the case. However, they could redecorate the RailKing UP 844 FEF model into a plausible representation of an NYC Niagara. Both locomotives were built by ALCO and have a similar design.

Glad everyone is enjoying this video! So far I have 298 subscribers and 69 videos on YouTube. Video 70 might be a special one if I reach 300!
