Uh...okay, I'll be the first to ask. All kidding aside, what's the purpose of the center rail here? Doesn't look like it could be dual-gauge trackage.

Judging from the tiles to the right, I'd say that this is the approach to a water pan. The center rail was there so if the water scoop was dropped early, it wouldn't drag on the ties and get ripped off / derail the whole shebang. Something to think about when they topped off at upwards of 80 MPH!

My grandparents rode the NYC in that era many times. Nice video - it was fun to watch. All the passengers looked like they were having a good time - due in large part to the dedication of, and the hard work put in by, the RR workers.
