Hi all, can anyone point me in the direction of a resource of what types of motive power and rolling stock were used on the Highline. I am especially interested in the last few years into the 70s.
I remember in 1966-68 seeing NYC Alco S2 switchers, two at a time, working refrigerator cars in the freight yard off 12th Ave. by the Westside Hwy. I saw a photo of an NYC Alco RS3 on the Highline but never one working the yards.
here is a shot of an RS3 on the high line, rail pictures.net has some stuff on the high line, I remember as a kid going down 11th ave towards Hudson yards and seeing RS3;s and alco FA's still wearing NYC colors although when I was a kid it was all Penn Central...Paul is correct too, I remember watching trains from the west side highway too....
That's a Jim Shaughnessy photo from 1957, he wrote an article on riding this engine down the West Side in the Winter 2016 Classic Trains. The article states that the last train was in 1980, and only switchers worked below 60th street yard. Surprised no one else mentioned this article, but not really.
