I thought that I would mention that on both Christmas day and new years day the entire New Haven Line was operated using the M-8 electric trains only. They operated from both New Haven and Stamford, CT. once an hour to and from there and New York's Grand Central Terminal.

Interesting information. Now, please tell us un-washed, "non-electrified" folks west of New York City, what this really means, i.e. how have they previously been operating the line?
To Hot Water:
Up until Christmas Day the line operated with the older M2, M4, and M6 electric cars just like the M3s and M7s that operate on The Long Island Railroad but with the addition of the over head wires and pantographs just like Amtrak and New Jersey Transit in and out of New York's Penn Station to Philadelphia and Washington, D. C.
You should get out more often and come over and see the new M8s. They are really something to look at and ride in.
If you make the trip to here in Westchester County I will even treat you to a ride from Mamaroneck, NY to Stamford, CT.

Well, thanks very much for the offer. Having been born & raised in northern New Jersey, and departed when I went to college, I really don't plan on going back east ever again. I tend to prefer working and railroading in the western U.S., plus I prefer steam locomotives anyway.
Thanks for the helpful information, however.
Never say never as to not planning on going back east ever again. I lived in San Diego during the 80s and 90s and came back here to Westchester County, NY. Much easier to get around here and with great public transportation as well. Lots more to do here too. I still know my way around Southern California and visit a friend in Burbank in July of 2012. Have several operating steam engines here in nearby CT and NJ. Where in the Western U.S. do you live "Hot Water"? I've been to all of the Western states at one time or another over the past 40 years.
San Diego does have s fair amount of steam. Campo is rebuilding several. Poway has a 30 inch narrow gauge tank engine. Steamed up every weekend. And Orange Co has all those theme park narrow gauge engines and up in Perris has alot as well.
I think both places have alot to offer. You are right about public transit though. Though now there is the pcc downtown.
