I grew up on the CSS&SB in northwest Indiana. I was young kid, but I can still remember the day when they first started replacing the older heavy commuter cars with the more modern stainless steel ones (~1984?).
I moved away 20 years ago after graduating from school and haven’t really been back to the area since then. I took my family back there this last week and just amazed at the amount of rail construction taking place on this line. Matter of fact, I planned to get on the train at Ogden Dunes and head to Museum of Science an Industry in Chicago and instead found out I needed to board a bus managed by NICTD to get me to the Gary stop to get into Chicago.
While getting on in Gary, I saw an unfamiliar device on the NICTD cars, just above the double doors on the roof and wasn’t sure what it was. I don’t remember this being there in the past, so I assumed this might be a PTC antenna, does any one have knowledge of this?
Growing up there, I never notice the catenary counter weights. This trip they seemed to stand out to me on the more modern catenary structures. Are these new or have they always been there? Not sure how often these are placed, maybe every mile or so? Regardless, I grabbed a picture and posted it below as I thought others might be interested. This was shot along Route 12 between Miller and Ogden Dunes.
