Since it is a deadhead, I don't think anyone has the exact schedule yet.  All that I have heard so far is that it will be some time after noon when they round the Curve.  The FWRHS posted their expected departure time from Conway on Facebook the night before, so maybe something more concrete will be known Sunday night.

 

I have decided to venture up to Altoona and see the assault on the Curve in person, then try to beat it back to the home territory here to see some more action.

Just finished watching the videos on a 3D monitor from work.  What you all got here was left eye only.

 

In HD 3D 1080i some of the shots worked really well.  My convergence point could have been a bit further back but all in all some decent looking 3D.

 

The Left eye on the same monitor looked absolutely gorgeous.  Lots of crisp 1080i HD video.  I'm pretty happy with the results for the first time I shot 3D.

Andy, Norm, I have a freind that works the Enola PA Yard dispatch. He is going to be calling me whet it departs the Enola Yards for its return to Pittsburgh. at this point, the exact time is unknown. I, will however, post the departure time on here as soon as I know. Then Im heading  up Route 34 to the "spot " Along Routes 11/15 to catch this thing first hand.

On Facebook, FWRHS posted that the scheduled departure from Enola is 6 a.m. Monday and that there will be a service stop (in Altoona?) of undetermined length.  Their best guess right now is that they will be at the Curve around noon.

I will be in the altoona yard doing bridge repair all day monday .Hope to catch her on the way back through. I am workin on the mail line with a with an NS employee. He tells me when i can work and when i have to move when the trains are coming. I should get a good shot up in my man lift when she comes through.Plus the NS cop cant kick me out this time through like he did the time before.I tried to hang out a little after work and was asked to leave. I went on top of the bridge and watched it from there. See ya monday.

When I finally broke free from work around 12Noon to check GPS, 765 was already at the Galitzen tunnels... so I'm guessing it must have been on the curve around 11:30ish.  It's now 1PM EDT, and the 765 is in "western slope" territory near Summerhill.

 

Hope to see some GRAND photos and video from folks who were able to make it trackside today!!!    Must have been a wonderful experience!!!

For those of us who couldn't make it to "the curve" today, here's a link to Norfolk Southern's "money shot" photo of 765 rounding Horseshoe Curve.

This is the angle I was expecting for the westbound trip.  Unless you have an inside connection to NS, the only way I'm aware one can reach this spot is by driving/walking through the road tunnel underneath the curve itself (i.e., past the visitor center) and then hiking up the hillside BEHIND the curve.  But it's an EXTREMELY steep hike -- not to be taken lightly.  There's also an ATV trail that runs parallel to the tracks back there for a bit.  But accessing that trail requires some effort too -- not something most folks would do.  And for an event such as this, getting back there might have been heavily discouraged except for those with proper credentials.

 

Looks like the park itself is a bit more crowded today than last Monday's east-bound trip.  But the sky doesn't have the crisp blue "pop" to it that we saw in photos from 8/13.  Nonetheless, that's THE angle to capture west-bound trains on the curve, IMHO.

Hey Rich, that might just be you we see at the engineer's helm of 765 in the photo I linked to above.  Were there a sea of photographers in that spot?  Or just the "official" NS photographer(s)?  Just curious!!! 

 

If I had been able to make it to the curve today, I would have captured the shot that NS posted... along with a nice close-up of you at the window of 765 using a different camera/lens combo.  Oh well... I'm sure you have more than a few pics already from this trip!!!

Yep...that's me.

 

There were about 15 people at that spot.

 

Yes... sounds about right.  After I asked, I saw one of the videos posted online that panned around that vantage point during the first few seconds, and I could see there was small handful of railfans who braved the steep hike up to that spot.  It's not the easiest place to reach, but as everyone here has now seen... OHHHH.... what a FANTASTIC viewing angle of the curve it makes for westbound trains.   

 

I'll never forget the first time I saw the curve from THAT angle... and I was a lot younger then and still needed to catch my breath a few times going up the steep climb.  Rumor has it one of the local railfans has now placed a heavy rope along "the trail" (if you could call it that) to help make the climb a bit more bearable.  Too bad the park folks didn't include that area as something more visitors could enjoy.  But for something as grand an event as this past week, they would have needed to hold a lottery for the relatively small number of folks that could be safely accommodated in that location.

Rich, I've been a professional still-image photographer for many years now, and am always learning much as the worlds of still-image and motion-video are merging together with the advent of DSLR's that are capable of producing HD video as well as the more traditional still images.  And with this new functionality comes a sea of "new accessory equipment", of course.   

 

For those who may not be aware, the type of very smooth camera movement exhibited in the video you posted is likely due to the use of not only a basic tripod, but one with a fluid head giving camera movement a MUCH smoother "look and feel" than video captured with even a regular tripod.

 

When learned properly, I'm finding the world of DSLR video is much closer to the discipline of professional cinematography than regular consumer video.  But that's a topic for another thread altogether.

Also note that the diesel is just IDLING!


I really appreciate that Rich but I have to be honest....That was shot with an iPhone....no tri-pod.

 

I have a couple others from the past weekend that I'll post online in the next day or so...a few where you can really hear how nice and square the 765's exhaust is!!!
