On the cuyahoga valley trip I noticed we were going considerably slower on the return trip. I assumed that there would be a speed restriction when pulling the berk in reverse at the end of the train. We asked the conductor, he assured us "the steamer's in neutral, we can go as fast as we want, she'll just roll along". But I am pretty sure we never topped 15 mph on the return trip... I also assume she would be in reverse, with the throttle slightly open, to carry some oil into the cylinders...

I seriously doubt THAT. For one thing, the reverser would be in reverse and some steam would have been provided through the valves and cylinders for lubrication. Second, the "trailing truck" of large steam locomotives is designed to support weight and,,,,,,,TRAIL, i.e. it generally does a poor job of "leading".

You are correct.

We ran more slowly on the return trip so the trip lasted 2 hours.

CVSR prefers that we run the 765 at track speed on those trips, to give the folks a good ride. But we can only go so far south before we have to stop and reverse direction. That's because the regularly scheduled Scenic Train is south of us and we have to fit in with their schedule.

So...we run slowly on the return so we get back to the station at the published time, that's all. There is no mechanical reason for it. The 765 has a maximum speed of 25 mph when running backwards.
