Well I have officially purchased my ticket for the Youngstown-Ashtabula trip with Nickel Plate 765; I figured that this trip probably would not happen again any time soon, so I better go for it. I created this thread for any and all discussions of these upcoming trips. I live about 10 miles from the Youngstown line itself across the PA line near Pymatuning Lake. I am thinking about following as best I can when it deadheads to Buffalo via Conneaut and Northeast, we will see. Any one else here purchased tickets or plan too for this rare mileage trip?

I'll be there...
Thanks for starting this thread, Sam. I hope we have good turnout of OGR Forum members on this trip.
If you are a fan of the NKP bridges, you will love THIS VIDEO.
It's 611 on the bridges, not 765, but we show almost all the big bridges on the way to Buffalo. That's why it is entitled "Bridges to Buffalo."
I'll be riding the 7/25/15 excursion with my father, repaying him for all the times he took me to see the 765 years ago.
Rich, hope to see you at some point during the day to say hello.

Same here.
I'll be running out of Youngstown on July 25, so I'll be up near the locomotive somewhere. If you can't get to the loco when boarding in Youngstown, come up there in Ashtabula when you get off the train.
Rich, when you bring the 765 for these 2 trips on the weekends of the 25th & 26th from Fort Wayne to Ashtabula, are you taking the NKP NS Lake Erie District line that goes through Lake County - Cleveland, Mentor, Painesville, Perry, Madison, Geneva, to Ashtabula or another NKP Line to Youngstown?
There is no "NKP line" to Youngstown. It's actually an ex-NYC line to Youngstown.
Ex-NKP - Fort Wayne - Bellevue - Cleveland - Ashtabula
Ex-NYC - Ashtabula - Youngstown
Is it NS all the way from Fort Wayne to Ohio to Buffalo and to PA? What route are you taking on the deadhead move from Buffalo to Allentown/Bethlehem? Via Harrisburg or via Scranton? I thought NS has a line from Buffalo to Harrisburg?
Hey Rich I am possibly chasing the trip saturday Can't afford to ride but will glad to see 765 and crew again.

Yes, the Buffalo Line runs from Buffalo to Rockville. No, the deadhead will NOT run via Harrisburg...

YES.

Buffalo - Binghamton - Allentown.
So two weeks until this rare mileage excursion. Very exciting. Rich how will 765 be positioned at the Covelli center?
Facing west on the Lordstown Secondary.
Will the train go in reverse in order to head north on the Youngstown line?
We will back off the Lordstown Line (about 1/2 mile) to Crab, then go north on the Youngstown Line.
Also, will 765 take the former Nickel Plate to Ashtabula and then head South to Youngstown?
YES.
I take it that 765 will spend any off time at Haselton Yard.
YES.

Nevermind. It's thru Butler. Correct me if I am wrong. Any idea of Dep time. Now to find a good spot.
Rich, have a few questions. I would like to see the 765 sometime during this weekend. The questions I have is, how fast will they have her going on the Youngstown Line espicially north of Route 82 up to the NS Yard north of Jefferson part of the AC&J? I do know that this line is mostly a straight track most of the way besides a few curves here and there. Also, will you have any runby's for the people who ride the train & where would the runby be at? And the final question is, which wye (NS or CSX Main) will you use the train at to head back to Youngstown? Also where from Ashtabula will you depart? The reason I ask these questions is because I would like to get video and pictures and like to be ready. This way I'm not rushing and to get myself ready to go for this weekend.

1) All steam locomotive operations on NS are restricted to 40MPH maximum.
2) No photo run-bys, due to insurance reasons plus it ties up the railroad for too long.
Thanks Hot Water. That does help. From my exprience as to what you mention, the Youngstown Line isn't a very busy line. It reminds me of a branch and bypass. I do know certain Ethanol & Freight lately take this line if the Cleveland line is very busy to split traffic. Where they get onto the Youngstown Line is in Beaver Falls PA. I do know this line used a lot to get to Ashtabula Harbor. The only passing track or siding I know of besides the yard north of Jefferson Ohio, is from Route 322 to Woodworth Road, about a 2.5 to 3 mile long passing track. I'm assuming that NS will try to keep regular traffic off this line until the 765 is done with trips Saturday and Sunday. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking that. The only other question besides the other post of asking, is 160.800 the scanner frequency for the Youngstown Line?
I think the only other question I forgot to ask. I know it's suppost to arrive in Ashtabula at 12PM and will sit from 12:30 to 2:30 for the departure at 2:30. The question I have is, where will the 765 sit and wait for the 2 hours and depart at 2:30?

No photo run.

NS Wye.
Also where from Ashtabula will you depart?
Train will be spotted with the 765 just in the clear west of Main Avenue.
We will be in the Ashtabula Siding for the layover. NS will have a couple of trains through there during that time, so we have to be out of the way.

The last question I have is, looking on google maps of the NS Lake Erie District diamond where the Youngstown Line crosses. The siding she'll be parked on, will that be the Youngstown line north or south of the NS Lake Erie District or on the NS Lake Erie District line east or west of the Youngstown Line. The reason I ask is because I would like to come up and see the 765 in person. I've never been to that location of Ashtabula before. That's why I ask so I can get my directions ready.
rich m. , do you have a black jeep lic. hemi no 5?-jim
I'll bet he does..Rich is an old Mopar man.
Going to miss seeing the 765 this time around. Always loved seeing go thru Leipsic Ohio. Was fun to tie up the diamond to get extra time to se the 765!
I guess that is what I get for retiring and moving back home to NC.
Yes.
Watched her roll through Berea, OH last night. So cool to see steam in Berea again!
This video below is not my video, but I thought I would post and share this new upload from someone which was posted within the hour on YouTube. I believe this was filmed from State Road Crossing. She almost looks and sounds like she might not make that grade out of Ashtabula, but I guess she did. She definitely worked hard on that grade with lots of stack talk. I read hear about the grade out of Ashtabula that Rich mentions in this news article http://www.ashtabulawave.org/archives/2098
I was able to catch 765 at US 322 west of Williamsfield, 10 miles from my home. The two hours were well worth it!
Sam, that's great. By chance did you get pictures or video? Again, someone else within the hour uploaded another video which is not mine. Here's about less then a mile southeast of the video above. Had to watch it 2 times as I thought I saw Rich in the video but wasn't sure, but he is. I do know that the black smoke doesn't have to be that thick on a grade, (Assuming it was for pictures, but could be wrong) but it sure shows power anyway. Not be stupid of dumb, but how much coal would it take to become that black or very little? From my knowledge and I know HotWater will be replying to this one, but isn't it when it's that black when they apply something to the coal? I only ask because that's almost the blackest I've ever seen in a video. I know there are a other videos out there, but for the latest, this takes the cake.
I believe Plymouth Road, but could be wrong.
I believe Plymouth Road, but could be wrong.
Thanks, I believe you are right based on the curve. I can't confirm 100% because Google Maps doesn't have a street view of that crossing.
I want to thank the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and Norfolk Southern for putting on the excursion out of Youngstown today. I had a great time and plan on catching the train go by at the 322 crossing near Williamsfield tomorrow (Again!) I'll get some more pictures up later. Had a great time on a truly rare mileage excursion.
Rich it was good to finally meet you, however brief, are you able to elaborate any on the deadhead move from Youngstown to Buffalo? Particularly when 765 will leave Youngstown.

Thank you gents for the great photos! I had hoped to be able to see the 765 this weekend, but too many family activities came up this weekend. Great weather! I have a coworker who wanted to go see it. I will have to check with him Monday to see if he did.
