Just got back from Vacation. I know this has been beating like a horse but I as well received my Berkshire with the broken front wheel bearing where the wheel almost fell off. Not mad at all since I already now the recourse as Lionel will make it right. Beautiful engine none the less. I did speak with the LHS and they did infact inspect the engine and even wrote on the invoice inspected and OK before they shipped. Like some have said before, the front wheels are just not secure enough while packaged. They move to much and with shipping being rough, could have caused them to break.

Please contact Lionel and they will send you the proper parts. Which are two bearings to replace those that came broken. This has been around the forum for awhile, but not everyone knows about this debacle with the Berkshire locomotives. Call Lionel and they will make it right.
Before putting this away (sometime around July?) I think a piece of foam or other material would be a good thing to place between the truck center pilot and boiler before boxing up.
Repairing this issue takes a few minutes once the parts arrive. After that, the Berkshire will run just fine. Lionel has been very good about helping customers with this minor issue.
Here is my opinion . The ground strap/copper in the top picture should be installed with the copper ground on top ,pushing the wheel assembly up ,not down. Look at the rear truck assembly you will see what I am talking about .The ground strap is pushing the wheel assembly up
Just a beautiful engine. Very nice purchase.
I did email Lionel but they are unavailable due to the holidays. So for now I managed to put back in the broken bearings in a tight fit without the glue for now until I get a replacment. So I was happy to be able to run the engine on my layout.
Hi all
well all is fixed. Lionel sent me the replacement bearings and she is good to go. Here are some closeup pics.
