Took No 779 to the club tonight for her first run around. I bought her at a local train show back in Oct and this was her first foray out onto the 'high iron'
The level of detail on these 15 yr old models is terrific

Cool Sam. Is she a K-line or Lionel ?

Very nice model and layout.
Nice loco Sam, and the layout too!

"NPR" is National Public Radio.
The reporting mark for the Nickel Plate Road is "NKP."
I edited your original post to fix this, Sam.

That's the Lionel TMCC version from 2003 or so....and a beauty.
I ran mine about two or three months ago. (It normally is on display in my office.)
It's a very smooth runner and a very good looking model. It doesn't smoke like a Legacy model and it only has two chuffs.....but I still very much enjoyed running it. By no means do you feel like you're running a dated engine. At least I didn't. (I think this model just missed Railsounds 5 by a year.)
It actually has the correct size "font" where Nickel Plate Road appears on the tender and the initials NYC & StL appear on the sand dome. On the Legacy 765s, the fonts are bigger/oversized.....not that it really bothers me.
I also like the subtle graphite grey on the smoke box and the firebox on this model. For my taste, I much prefer this over the much lighter grey on the second Legacy 765....which I always thought was overdone.
After 14 or so years of running, all that I have done to mine is keep refilling the smoke fluid, keep it lubricated (which is really easy to do) and replaced one traction tire. That's it. Zero problems.
I paid $780 for mine in early 2004 and they frequently sell for around $500 now. Compare that to what the new versions will be selling for, BTO style.
Lastly, great looking layout Sam!!
Sam,
Are you springing for Southern 2716?
Heath
Thanks for the nice comments guys, Especially for your edit Rich - I should have known that. It was late... :-)
Heath, I rarely buy anything 'new' these past several years. Only exception was the recent Legacy L&N E8s that I couldn't resist.
Will hopefully provide some good photo coverage on the new club layout when we have the chance to clean up the facility and open to the public.
Berkshire President - Enjoyed your background info. I sprung for this one at $450 which included a RK caboose seen in this last photo below!
