I don't normally share my holiday snaps but, Nicole's (N.Q.D.Y.) recent post about her Austrian adventure inspired me to do this.

I've just got back from a 5 day road trip to Chama NM and Durango CO to ride the Cumbres & Toltec and Durango & Silverton narrow gauge lines.

If any forum members don't know these railways, they offer a feast of visual, aural and nasal train related delight!

I've previously ridden full-size, restored steam trains in CA, UK and Australia. These were all great experiences but, they seemed to me like moving museum exhibits because their original purpose had disappeared.

When we drove into Chama on a sunny evening, I was absolutely amazed to see five (yes 5!!!) steam locomotives under steam and moving around the yard, doing what they probably would have done in the 20's, 30's and 40's. There was even a "Galloping Goose"!

After the Cumbres & Toltec, we drove the 90 odd miles to Durango and checked into our hotel.

The returning train from Silverton passed within 50 feet of our hotel room - I was so excited, I forgot to take a picture!
