Hello,
This picture of an O-scale 2-rail Mogul on Ebay doesn't show that the side rod is connected to the leading drivers...is this an optical illusion?
I don't want to buy a 2-6-0 with only 4 wheels driving!

Optical illusion. 3rd Rail would not make such an error.

I had one of these on order for it seems years and finally gave up my reservation as I didn't know what my finacial situation would be when they decided to get them on the home front. . It wasn't like the old days when an importer would just bring in a number of models and sell them out. Now they, the brass and plastic importers want reservations but they take it seems forever.
I recognize that these importers want to know how many they can sell before they send the order to China for production as they don't want money sitting on the sidelines in overproduction. It is the way we do business today and I now look for extras on Ebay or other forums to buy what I want. I would be interested in a new Sd 70 from Overland but at the right price.

Yeah ditto on what Rusty said.
I was visiting Sunset some years ago when these moguls had arrived and were being shipped out to the dealers. The side rods connected all drivers.

If you go to their website you can see the main siderod just below the crosshead slide block (is that the correct term?):
4 replies before the correct and painfully obvious answer came up. Really?
It's - as Bob said - simply the lower crosshead guide obscuring the front of the
side rod.
Seriously? This wasn't obvious?

Yeah that's the "optical illusion" part of our answers....guess that wasn't obvious...
No, gentlemen... it wasn't obvious.
I want to thank you all who reassured me that the leading driver set is indeed connected to the side rods!
Now I can sleep.

(The Opthamologist who performed Cataract surgery on both my eyes warned me that for about 2 years, side rod connections may appear obscured.)
That SS model is also available with a whale back tender which would be an easier candidate for bottom surgery. I have both. tt
HEY TOM,
According to Ebay and Public Delivery Track (where I buy all my Atlas rolling stock), the Vanderbilt tender is the only one available...no more whalebacks.
You have both? If you have one with a Western road name, (UP, SP, or Santa Fe), I'll buy it!

My comment was not directed at you Hal.
HEY CHRIS,
Whether it was or wasn't, it's cool with me!

Hal,
Those model are of a SOUTHERN PACIFIC locomotive, thus they DO NOT come in other "western road names", since no other Western road had locomotives that looked exactly like that. Remember, we aren't dealing with Lionel toy trains here, where they put any road name they want on the side of any and every model, in some cases.

Good deal.
Very well then, Southern Pacific is just fine with me, cuz it's a Western road!
See? My GP-60 is also an ESPEE!

That was a good one...your finding out that most all the questions you have are being answered....some with the occasional friendly poke. Trust me we all get along fine, but just need to bust on someone now and then...pool room style stuff...keep laughing and running those trains, and asking questions with obvious answers to keep the pot stirred.... ...so you gonna pop for that mogul before someone else grabs it? It is a beauty.

Well...not quite.
That type of crosshead is called an "Alligator" crosshead. (N&W 611 has this type of crosshead guide.) It has upper and lower guides. In that photo the connecting rod is hidden behind the lower guide.
HEY BOB,
The Public Delivery Track people will be returning from their Eastern train show tomorrow, and that's when I plan to order that Mogul!
HAL
It is a beauty...at times I wish I modeled the Espee.
Thanks for the clarification Rich!
I keep looking at that photo; what a lot of fine detail they've put on that engine.
I've always read that brass engines are "fragile" but the Williams brass Mikado I recently bought is one pretty tough piece of brass. I've handled it more than most of my die-cast engines and have yet to bend or break anything.
Bad order,

I hope you don't end up with floaters as I ded in one eye. I keep seeing things like flys moving around my head and sometimes end up swatting at nothing. Almost funny.
So are those mts. you got irrigation covers to hide the works?
