All I've ever used are these paints, mostly because that is what my local hobby shop carries.  Are there other, maybe even better model paints out there?  Is so, what is a good source for them on the internet?

Testors has announced that it is ending its Floquil and Polly Scale lines of paints, including dozens of model-railroad specific colors. Testors will continue to take orders from retailers and ship paint for a limited time based on available quantities. In addition to Floquil and Polly Scale, Testors is also ending its lines of Pactra and ColorArtz paints. Floquil paints are solvent-based, and Polly Scale acrylic paints are water-based.

You need to be patient on this issue.  That Testors is divesting product lines that don't fit into their future (read: make sufficient profit), is not to say someone else might see a fit and buy the rights.

It is my understanding that discussions re the same are in progress.

This is not just an O scale issue, it's affecting the whole hobby of model railroading.  It's too early to be committing sepuku (better known as hari kari) or rushing to put your hobby on the internet auction block.  This hasn't played out to the end.

Those of us who were around in the 410M Paint era had similar responses when that company folded its tent.  Many kit producers offering pre-painted sides would reference matching or complementing colors in the 410M product line in their instructions.  When all the wrist-slashing ideas dissipated, we learned to accept alternatives.  Now, with all of this great internet knowledge-sharing...e.g., this forum...it should be even easier/faster to obtain alternatives to either a short-term or (gasp!!) long-term absence of Floquil products.

I try to stay optimistic about situations like this.  Change of ownership is pretty much a way of life these days in the world of business/manufacturing/marketing.

Actually, I'm more concerned about the future of Berkshire Valley's product line than of Floquil's.  Now THAT's an O gauge hobby problem worth praying about!!!

But, that's just MHO, as usual...

Indeed!  Not a scale specific issue and echoing across all model RR'ing groups & forums

What a concept!   There are alternatives.....and most us have enough paint squirelled away to last for a few years.

Yes!  The Berkshire Valley line of parts & kits - any idea who bought them??

It would be nice if the remaining Testors, solvent and acrylic based paints were double marked with the Railroad colors that were so convenient.  Refer Grey is now.....???  Even a color chart conversion, to the Railroad colors we are familiar with,  would be a plus.    But then I guess it all depends on how much of a Model Railroad Paint market there is, and what it's worth.  As this stuff approaches $5 an oz.  I would think it to be close to liquid gold.   Maybe and apparently not at the moment.  Scalecoat (Weaver) and Badger Modelflex are very good acceptable products.  Interesting to note that there are 25+ bottles of paint on my work bench.

IMO

I'm not sure this is a done deal yet...unless you know something I don't?  When I asked the owner at the April York meet, his last (), he indicated he had one more party he was talking to re the sale of BV.  He didn't sound very positive or project a feeling of optimism.  I surely hope I'm wrong, though.  I sensed this might be a 'Champ Decals' situation...no buyer=walk away.  I hope not.

Must....keep....positive.    Must.....keep.....positive.

I stocked up today on weathering colors since that is the bulk of the air brushing I do with Floquil.  For brass, I prefer Scalecoat, and hopefully they will be around for a while.

There is always hope that somebody can arrange a purchase of the Floquil and PollyScale line, but I wasn't going to wait on hope.  Too much motive power and equipment to weather in O and HO.

Had to get the Floquil colors off of E-Bay.  The three hobby shops I went to in the Chicago area either don't carry it, or were already picked over.  Walthers shows backordered for the colors I wanted.

Have you tried The LaGrange Hobby Center, on Lagrange Road?  That has been the place I've been getting Floquil for some 40 years. Definitely NOT CHEAT though.

Must be partly my fault,too...I am still using Testor's for touchups, but thought

Floquil was expensive, and prone to solidify in the bottle.  It had disappeared from

local hobby shops until fairl recently, when a shop that really specializes in radio

controled vehicles and planes began carrying a wide variety of brands of different

paints including Floquil.  I definitely had experience with 410M solidifying, and find

I don't have a bottle of that left, and I have some paint that has been around for

decades.   I have gone to Walmart and other big box rattle cans since I don't have

to match a prototype, but did in the past and might again.  I, too, spoke to Berkshire

Valley at York where they didn't sound hopeful for a sale.  I would think it would be a

good fit for the other small parts maker who sets up in O scale shows but not at York,

who seems to have all the car parts castings that were used on Walthers and All-Nation kits.  I can't think of their name....

I keep getting mixed signals on this.  Yes/no and maybe....

I had considered buying the line myself, and moving the entire line to resin, but the reality is that I do not have the time for doing that....  Just bad timing.

Badger Modelflex Color Chart.  Click on the underlined phrase to link.   Modelflex Paint should be available via Walthers.  A check of the Walters site for Modelflex paint shows a lot of holes.  Anything but a complete product line.
