Now I'm a at loss. I'm trying to narrow stuff down or rule things out.

I've got a triplex that has several issues and I'm getting them fixed one at a time.

I've got the engine to chuff now and the tender is working too. There are three smoke units overall. The one in the tender is working fine. The main unit only has the fan running, no smoke output. There's a smoking whistle that does nothing.

I'm checking all the wires for continuity and they seem OK?

I took out the main smoke unit and the elements look like they were never, ever turned on? They have resistance across the terminals and I applied about four volts and heard them start to work. The fan works fine with a battery too.

I pulled out the smoking whistle unit and it checks out fine too?

I tried another board set from a G gauge dash 8. Still no smoke???

So I'm left thing there's something about the triplex's smoking whistle that has it's own control board. Maybe there's something not turning the smoke on? or shorting something out?

The smoke units (main and tender slave) appear to be wired in parallel to the boards smoke pins and I would think at least the main unit is independent anyways and should work? I ran voltage thru the wires and the main smoke works? Now I'm stumped!

Joe,

There's a smoking whistle that does nothing.

My friend has this engine. In order for the whistle to smoke, we had to do the following:

  • Turn on the SPW (Playable Whistle) soft key
  • Turn on turn on the soft key for the Smoking Whistle (SSW, I think) next to the SPW
  • Play the whistle with the thumbwheel and the smoke varies with the whistle.

It's pretty impressive!

You must, however, add the engine to a DCS Remote that has 4.10 or later in it or the soft keys won't appear.

His engine had a problem that the cover for the whistle's smoke fluid couldn't be removed. We put fluid in using an insulin needle.

Thanks Barry.

I did see a soft key.

When I selected it for some reason, it didn't want to do anything for me.

I have to learn what to select and push I guess.

I thought that the whistle smoke had power all the time so the element was hot?

There's a complex little circuit board inside that gets it's wires from  different functions.

Doesn't it smoke when the regular whistle is blown?

Ahhh. That's why the one key did nothing!

I see it here in the video around 3 min in

thanks for the help. Now let's see if it works!

OMG!!!

that's about four hours I won't get back. should have read something first. Smoking whistle works good now. Tender's smoke unit still working. Tender now works since the chuffs were fixed. Broken wire to the tach.

Now after running power to the main smoke unit for a test, the smoke starts coming out when reassembled? Not sure why but I'll take it!

Some small items need repair like the pick-up slider shoes and the railings.

Thank you to all!!!
