I have an MTH Railking GP20 with the 3 volt DCS system.  When this engine was last run about 8 months ago, everything including the sounds worked great.  I just put it back on the track and allowed the battery to charge for several hours.  I started the engine using the start up button and the lights came on but no sounds.  It ran fine and all the controls seemed to work as advertised.  I have checked the sound button (#4) a lost of times and no sounds.  I rotated the volume pot. a number of times without any change.  I did a factory reset and still no sounds.  I have tried the volume up button about 50 times and still no sounds.  I removed the shell and could not locate any wires that seemed poorly connected or out of place.

I am not sure how to check the speaker so that has not been verified.

Any suggestions on where to go from here.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Don

Hi Don,

Can you hear any background noise out of the speaker?  There should always be a little hiss in the PS2 audio circuit when the engine is turned on.  If not, the speaker isn't getting any output.  That could be caused by a broken wire, failed audio amp, or a loose pin on the board connector.

A little harder to do with no sound to start, but can you do a feature reset in conventional (1 W and 5 B in sequence).  Audio amps usually don't fail without a specific event such as grounded speaker lead or terminal, AC spike, or a bad smoke unit fan.

It can be repaired at the component level.  Really not much more you can do with out swapping in a new speaker or swapping boards to another engine.

A service tech can test and repair the boards as necessary.  I can do it if you don't have someone local.   G
