Reading another online magazine, there was a discussion about how to quieten roadbed. However, one gentleman brought up a unique subject that I haven't seen discussed here before...noisy Box Cars attributing to the sound level. His reply noted that hollow plastic boxes are noisy and that placing a piece of U-shaped foam, touching the sides, will deaden the rattle and echo. Has anyone else tried this?

Jim,
There are those who laugh about doing it. It does work. Years ago a club I was in did this to 150 cars. Running long consists became pleasurable.
God Bless,

I have a lot of Weaver cars. After I weight them, I use old clean socks loosely rolled into a ball. I do this on the covered hoppers also. On rail that is flat on top like Gargraves or Atlas Use flat wheels, not fast angle. Delrin wheels are really quiet.

AAaaHHHHHHhhhhh, "Clean Socks", I knew I forgot something. Now when I change them over to "clean socks", visitors will again come into my train room.
Yes, I have gone the socks in the boxcar route with several plastic postwar cars. However I used the ones my wife darns, as in "This sock has a hole, now it's a rag! Oh darn!" lol
The socks really do make a difference in noise level.
Pillow foam cut into blocks that are slightly large also work well.
They have the advantage of being easily removable as well.
Good idea, I think I'll apply this.
Hmm well I'm going to try it as well. I have a bunch of left over foam here...can't hurt.

Cant hurt? I don't know about that. Incompatible foam and plastic combos do exist! Better keep an eye over time. If the sock elastic manages to touch plastic I bet you get a reaction there for sure. Great idea but proceed with a touch of caution.
