Hello. Let's say you have a line that leaves your primary layout table, and runs partway around the perimeter of the room, (or to a different room), to a second table where it loops and comes back.

This seems simple if there are two tracks connecting the two tables - ingoing and outgoing.

But I occurs to me that I can accomplish the same thing with only one track for ingoing and outgoing, if I incorporate a switch at the start of the return loop.

Track and switch would most likely be Atlas.

So my question is: In this one line scenario, can the switch be automated somehow so that the operator does not have to worry about working it at such a distance?

Most Lionel electric switches are "non-derailing" providing the automatic operation you are looking for. Even FasTrack manual switches have this feature. I believe the Atlas switches have spring loaded points that provide the non-derailing function, which will keep the returning train going in the same direction through the loop until the operator throws the points. There is a "non-derail" circuit board available from Atlas to give an electric function to the feature.
