This would make a neat new model train! What the heck is the middle car, obviously a modified engine of some sort. Found in Altoona, PA recently.

The name on the last car is 'RESEARCH'

I'd like to see the pictures. I saw something similar in Roanoke the other day as I made my way to the dentist. it was parked right next to the old Virginian depot which burned (And the effort to restore it seems to have crashed and burned).
You see the research cars around here all the time and another marked Dynamo.
Don't know about the engine you saw but these two cars almost remind you of a set of Doodle Bugs.

Do you mean this...NS' track geometry train? It was rebuilt from an SD-35 #1530, the cab having just recently been added to house equipment. No controls in the cab. It is towed and the crew rides behind in the car.
