Not sure what current value would be but this one in the ABA configuration was probably the most desirable to us as kids. I only saw one of these at a bank in New Orleans around their Christmas tree in the lobby. Simply beautiful!
This is not a real sent unless you have the original set box and all that came in it with their boxes and paperwork. The best way to price it is to buy the most 2017 Greenburg price guide and price each item. From looking at the guide I would say $800 to $1,200.
From looking at the TM Price guide from 2011 - the complete set with boxes is nearly $4,500 in like new condition.
Beautiful set.
Perhaps an eBay search will help. This was a simple one:
These sets have come way down in value, because of the demand has fallen. Use to be this set would bring in allot of coin, I have never seen it with all its original boxes, only at the Carrail museum... But now since Lionel reissued the set and because of command control being in high demand, I would say this set is worth about 900.00 to 1000.00 to the right American Flyer collector.

Not the same set. The set in this thread has PA's. That set linked has the infamous AF EMD F's.

Set 5685RH sold for 849.95. The set under discussion looks awesome! Wish it graced my layout....

That appears to be the same set. Well done thou good and faithful servant.
Yeah, I know... I don't think the NP ever had PA's... but it is still A BEAUTIFUL SET!
5685RH is the 56 set with an ABA and 5 cars. 57 saw set 20370 slim down to an AA with 4 cars. 58 saw set 20445 slim down to an A unit with a single motor and 4 cars. The 20370 trailing A has a unique number found only in that set. 20445 A unit and cars had 5 digit numbers. Set boxes are what make the value especially in the 57 and 56 sets.
