I am considering adding cylinder valve smoke and a steam whistle smoke to this engine (J.D.S. install).

Does anyone know if this class articulated engine had whistle steam smoke or did all steam locos feature a smoking steam whistle.

I don't want to go to the expense for this addition if it won't be prototypical.

Thank you

Thank you

The amount of steam visible from a whistle is totally dependant on ambient air temperature and humidity.

On a hot dry day, the steam would barely clear the chime before it dissipated.

Here is a Z-5 pulling into Glendive(top photo), the stack smoke is huge! the NP burned a low grade coal called Rosebud coal, basically close to pete moss or dirt... and it was practically free! The second looks to be at Livingston, a beautiful place frozen in time.

I think you could upgrade the smoke units to add the whistle and the generator.
