On this episode of Notch 6, Jack “Hot Water” Wheelihan joins me to discuss his career with EMD, his time spent firing Southern Pacific 4449, Union Pacific 844 and 3985. If that wasn’t enough, we’ll discuss his 3 rail scale layout and why he decided to dismantle and sell the majority of his collection. It’s a fascinating story of one man's passion for railroading and the wonderful journey it has taken him on.

Great interview!!
I especially liked Hot Water's explanation about the engineer pushing too hard for boiler pressure and that not allowing enough steam contact time in the superheater to reach design operating temperature, thus running inefficiently.
He sold most of collection. wish I knew about that. He had some great pieces.

His collection is up for auction on Friday November 30th.
I’ve gotten through two thirds of the pod cast. Nice to hear the man behind the legend that is Hot Water.

Great interview! Jack, thanks for taking the time to share some stories of your illustrious career. I really enjoyed hearing you explain how you learned to fire and throttle a steam locomotive for efficiency.
Derek, thanks for your efforts producing the Notch 6 podcast. I really enjoyed this one, keep up the good work!
If you haven’t listened to this episode yet, turn it on the next few times you are in the car or have a few free minutes, you won’t be disappointed!
Thanks for the nice comments. Sorry that I've been "out of touch" for the last 4 days, as I forgot the Apple MacBook Air at our daughter's house, when I returned home from the Bob Seger concert. FedEx just delivered it.
Derek has asked me to do another "interview" with some details of various "best times" or "worst times" when working with 4449, 84, and/or 3985. Guess we'll see how that one goes.
