I see whole trains of the rapid discharge hoppers here in Butler Pennsylvania on the CN (formerly B&LE) tracks.  At first I didn’t know what they were, but Tom enlightened me.  😊

Thank You Mark and as to what you mention Jim, that last discharge hopper, it has always been on this CSX Local. It acts as a caboose and FRED on the rear end of a train. It also helps the crew know their last car on the train, ( same principal as a caboose ) so this way they can justify distance when backing up, etc.  This local runs between Ashtabula - Willoughby Ohio and back every weekday. Doesn't run weekends unless as needed.
