I am trying to locate a smoke stack for a 24’ NP wood caboose.  I have ordered several off the internet and none seem to be tall or wide enough compared to images of the real ones on online.   When ordering, very little info seems to exists on sizes of these stacks before purchase.  I have tried building my own (example shown below)  and cannot get the cone right in transitioning from the smaller to larger pipe when trying to cut it out of sheets or brass and soldering up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks Malcom,

Any idea who would sell the right one?

I took another shot at making another one tonight, not symmetrical but I thought closer.  In picture below, you can see the ones I purchased thus far with the small tops, and three I made that were worth keeping for a future project.

I agree that a mini lathe would be great instead of using my drill and spinning soldered pieces to develop a rough shape.

Thanks for the likes and appreciate the feed back Jim and Malcom.

I am getting close to painting, but afraid to start after several bad experiences recently.  Do I need to prime it?  I was concerned about issues with paint sticking to the brass and also too much paint filling in my simulated wood grain from sanding it.

What about wood cabooses, should they be primed?  I had another caboose (Nkp) that i started at the beginning of the COVID stuff from a ambroid kit.   I had the same concerns about paint sticking to brass.

I plan to paint with acrylics, and recommendations on primer if needed would be great.

Mike,

I prime everything with Testors light ghost gray.  It is from their aircraft line and is dead flat.  The only exception is when I’m painting yellow or green then I use Testors flats white. Both of these are Model Masterpaints.  It adheres to styrene and brass beautifully.

I paint with Scalecoat II most of the time but my favorite caboose red is Testors 1103 in th 1/4 oz. bottles.

I cant wait to see your NP finished.

Malcolm
