Anyone have the cost of the events? Seems you have to go through signing up process BEFORE learning prices to decide if you do or don't want to go. Sort of like going to a resturant then finding out the meal cost after ordering, or finishing the meal.

I may be wrong, but I think you order the "registration packet" for details inlcuding prices about the convention. Not sure if there is a charge for that. I am thinking about attending, and ordering the packet soon. My younger brother has vacationed in Alaska, and enjoyed it very much.

Are you a member of the NRHS? If so, you should have received information about the annual convention.

Yes I am a member and all I found out was to go to the website and begin filling out the registration packet, then if you complete this step, then it will take you events and prices. Seems strange that they want the info as though they think you are already going to go, and not inquiring about pricing.
This is really retorical as we can't go anyway, with my wife recovering from the October auto accident she couldn't navigate up the coach steps or walk over rough terrain or endure long walk tours. But we were curious what the costs were as we HAD planned on going, as this was on our "bucket list" to see Alaska. I don't imagine Alaska Railroad would normally provide the kind of interesting behind the scenes tours for railfans as they will for NRHS one.

RRMAN - if part of the tour is on the White Pass and Yukon, the trains include cars with hydraulic lifts so passengers in wheelchairs or other disabilities don't have to climb up on or off the trains.
And if it does include the WP&Y, and you haven't been, don't miss it. My wife and I did it in 2011 as an adjunct to a cruise, and it is spectacular.

The Alaska Railroad has lifts as well for passengers.
Rumor has it the ARR wanted this steam engine completed by Sept. 2013. To pull a train for the group. Not sure if it will be completed in time.

The prices are all with the event descriptions on the NRHS website.
When you are on the convention page, just click on the Registration Package. This material (about 40 pages) has first general information about the convention, and then details on every event along with their prices. It also has information on hotels, travel options (air, cruises, road, etc.) to Alaska, and lots of other stuff. Everyone considering attending the convention should read it first as it has details about air fare discounts, various travel and tour discounts, and full explanations about the events.
More information will be posted over the next few weeks in this area as more details about discounts being offered by the Alaska Railroad becomes available.
