Just saw a photo on the "Altoonaworks" website of the NS GE engine being rerailed today. Have several "sidewinders" doing the job. Boy, is that engine beat up !! Looks like it will need a whole new car body.

The "Sidewinders" can rerail them, no problem!

Hopefully it will be repaired but probably painted black.
Just like Mcjagger of the Rolling Stones sang it!
Wreck Repair Progress....NS SD70ACe 1036, which was wrecked (along with AC44C6M 4001) in a derailment that occurred at McVeytown, PA back on April 14th. The first photo shows the 1036 on April 23rd after it was uprighted, rerailed, and moved to a siding at Mattawanna, PA to await movement back to the NS Juniata Shops at Altoona. The second photo was taken yesterday (09/19) outside the Juniata Shops and shows the 1036 with its cab removed for repairs and the right portion of the front pilot replaced. For those wondering, AC44C6M 4001 will soon enter the Juniata Shops for wreck repairs as well. Photo credits to Marc Lingenfelter.

What happened to it? What is a sidewinder?
thanks, Dave
It's a bulldozer fitted with a crane+counterweight apparatus on its sides. A quartet of these can lift a derailed locomotive and carry it back to undamaged track.

Derailment/wreck.
What is a sidewinder?
A type if Caterpillar tractor (D7). Try Googling it, for additional information & photos..
thanks, Dave
i'd like to add these track-tractors were first made to lay pipe when constructing pipelines around the world. in the 1960's-70's ,they started using them for recovery of railroad equipment.this pretty much ended the use of the railcar derricks and cranes.
