First of all I am not one of those foamers, in fact I do quite the opposite by putting in lots of hours painting, scraping, putting in ties, and running trains by volunteering on the local tourist railroad by my school and working as an engineer on the dinner train that shares the same line. It's very disheartening to read when railfans such as yourself criticize any sort of railroad whether it be a class one or a tourist line for not having something painted the right way or not having something the way that they think would be right, but when given the opportunity to actually help out and paint or donate to a fund to put an engine back into working order all the people that were criticizing usually disappear. While I'm not saying that this is how it is with most people who are into trains it does count for the majority that I have met whether it was in person or on a forum.

P.S.. I couldn't care less what roadname or color is painted on the side of a train.

They have one "heritage" unit, and repainted it black. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. But then again, NS never was a "class act". They are the rattiest-looking Class 1 I've ever seen, steam program and OCS units nonwithstanding. The local shortline looks more professional than they do.

Want to see a railroad with class? Look at UP. Sorry if I offended all the NS foamers. Wink

Ask Metra commuters about the UP's class act when they had coal trains delaying the scoots several years ago. Or when UP wanted royalties for every image published or for every UP model train made.

I remember reading somewhere that when the UP heritage units will need repainting, the will emerge from the paint shop back in yellow and grey.

I like heritage units, I wish the BNSF would do some, but they haven't. Am I upset, worry about it or think BNSF is missing the boat? No.

Hertiage paint has a finite lifespan. It cost more to paint and the practicality of standard paint eventually outweighs the benefit of heritage paint.

And although I'm not an NS enthusiast, the NS from my perspective apppears to be doing just fine.

Guess you haven't looked at, or riden in, some of those "trashy" UP units scattered all over the nation. Look Pal, the UP is no better than any other class 1 RR, so keep your foaming to yourself.

You can never make railfans happy!
I hate to burst your bubble, but the NS 21st Century Steam Program is NOT being run for railfans. In fact, if you were to make a list of the various audiences for the program (employees, shippers, politicians, media, general public, etc.) I don't think "railfans" is even on the list.

What in blue blazes are you talking about? BNSF doesn't need to make special heritage locos: they already have just about every paint job ever used already out there. Ever seen a BNSF consist out here? Everyday I see the pumpkins, the red & silver ATSF, blue & yellow Sante Fe geeps, green & white BN..... Heck, it's ALL still here, in Branchline Land!
