I'm guessing the #765 is the magic number!

Great news...it's gonna be a great summer for steam. Heres the info on the TVRM/21st Century Steam page as well.
The world is not yet ready for the 611/1218 return. Be patient!
I'm thinking seriously about getting tickets for Max and I on one of those May round trips from Lewistown, PA to the curve and back. Let's see; I have to be in Baltimore on business the week of May 20 and I have family in Lewistown so no need for lodging...
Yup; I think I can do this.

Question: Will 765 be routed thru Pittsburgh on its way to Lewistown?
NS Website:
And as we know, steam engines can't fly without us notcing
I would imagine so. It will likely follow the same route east that it took last August for the employee trips.
Curt
I'M excited!

Yes, it will head thru Pittsburgh on its way east. Another way would be on the ex-NKP route to Buffalo, then down the Buffalo Line to Harrisburg, then west to Lewistown via the Pittsburgh Line. But that's a little out of the way.
Plus, I hear the guy that runs this forum knows ALOT better than me, and I'm subject to clarification.

To Rich Melvin: Will the 765 deadhead thru Pittsburgh?
Rich,
Are you going to give us a "heads up" as to when the tickets will go on sale?
I wonder if the NS will allow the steam engines to operate without their "diesel trailer" this year? Did either engine have any foul up during the tours in 2012 that required the diesel to be cut in?
Another question: When the NS first planned these employee excursions, there was talk that the Southern Mikado, #4501, was being readied for mainline service. Haven't heard anything about that proposal for some time now. Anyone know anything about how that's coming?

Brad:
I'm kind of anxious for more info too as I have to make air and rental car reservations. Took care of the lodging part when my sister who lives in Burnham said their guest room will be waiting for me.
Being Memorial Day weekend and the likelihood that space on the three Lewistown/Horseshoe Curve trips will go fast, your safest approach to tickets out of Lewistown is probably to do what I did. Send the FWRHS an e-mail advising your preferred date and number of tickets. The website says they will have ticketing info available soon and, for the reasons noted above, the sooner the better (for me, at least).

I was on the Spencer to Barber Jct trip last year and 630 ran all the trip on her own.
She did have Diesel power with a slug from the ferry move from Greenville,SC to Spencer,NC but they where used to save on coal and water.
I'll be getting my tickets for this year trip since they will be running it again for my Birthday.

We'll have a diesel when it is needed. When do we "need" a diesel?
1) To stretch the coal on long, 250+ mile deadheads, as in Cleveland - Pittsburgh - Altoona and a couple others.
2) For dynamic brakes coming down the mountain into Altoona.
When on the former PRR, we may have the PRR Heritage Unit.
We will probably not have a diesel on the Rocky River to Bellevue trip.
Short trip...no grades...so it won't be needed.
On the last move we made in 2012 we ran all the way from St. Louis to Fort Wayne without any diesel in the consist. By then NS had gained sufficient confidence in the 765 and her crew that they were comfortable with us on the main line without a diesel.
Since 630 will be returning to the rail again this spring here's some shot I cought of her last year in operation.

Rich, will you have the coal cars in the excursion train, like last year, or will there be just coaches? I understand why you needed them but it did detract from the train's appearance.

I'll let Rich give the final word, but the coal gons were only used on the ferry runs. Out of all the trips I saw, NONE of the passenger runs had the coal gons.
It just makes more sense operationally to move the coal with the 765 (or 630) than to have to do extra switching on both ends to tie them onto a freight.
Kevin
P.S. For what it's worth, one of the best pictures of 765 I got last year WAS a ferry run with the gons up front and no diesel. For all intents and purposes, it was 765 on a freight.
I believe I saw them in the consist going around Horseshoe Curve.
Rich, can you go into any more detail on your comment above:
'' 2) For dynamic brakes coming down the mountain into Altoona.''
Us east-coast-starving-for-mainline-steam-fans are dying to know if you will get to tackle going UP the mountain from Altoona with just the 765 this time?
Also, what about between Altoona & Lewistown?
759 stretched her legs a few times on that piece of RR some 40-odd years ago.
(and like you said in another thread on here a few weeks back, 765 aint chopped liver!)
I believe I saw them in the consist going around Horseshoe Curve.
that was a ferry move, not an Employee Appreciation Trip. The Horseshoe Curve moves were to get the engine from Pittsburgh (where the EAS trips were run) to Harrisburg (where the EAS trips were run), and then back home to Fort Wayne.
Kevin
Thanks for the info, I thought that was a round trip.

Rich, when will 765 deadhead thru Pittsburgh? Could I have a date and approximate time?
I was hoping for modern, new freight cars to be painted in Nickel Plate Road and Wabash.
Andrew

We ran upgrade around the curve last time without using the diesel. It was just idling. I know...I was there.
The diesel will probably be in the consist for the entire trip from Lewistown (Harrisburg) to Gallitzin and back. It would take too much time to switch it into the consist in Altoona, plus we actually need it to stretch the coal a little. We start and end our day in Harrisburg, so as far as 765's fuel is concerned, we are running a round trip all the way from Harrisburg to Gallitzin and back.
No...I can't give you a time for the deadhead move via Pittsburgh. Deadheads don't run on a set schedule.
Rich, is there a 765 tracker app for iPhone?
Yes there is an app for that.
When we get closer to our operating dates, Kelly Lynch, our web guru, will activate it. When he does that, I'll post instructions here on how to get it.
Just asking,
How come you don't stay at Liewstown, there's a 110 foot active table there.
Len.
I can tolerate the gons on the tail end, but given how much publicity even the deadheads got, it wouldn't hurt to slap a nice coat of paint on them.
Well, there goes the neighborhood...
How about just being glad that steam is operating at all...
Just asking,

You can't turn the whole train on a 110-foot turntable.

Sure you can, one car at a time. Should only take you 10 or 12 hours to put the whole train back together.
Good grief!
Oh ok, didn't realize you are turing the whole train.
What is your traveling speed (MPH) set at? Any idea what time in the moring you guy's would be leaving for Liewstown?
This may be a dumb question but how do I purchase tickets for the Lewistown to Horseshow Curve trip? I don't see this information anywhere?
Thanks

Speed will be 40 mph. I think departure is set for 0830.

On-line ticket sales are not up and running yet. Watch the web site - www.765.org - for information. Ticket sales will go on line in a day or two.
Thanks!!
