According to the product overview the new DCS WTIU will require a tether to use the hand held remote #50-1038 while it does not say the same for the #50-1002. Does anyone know the specifics and how do you tell the difference between the two remotes. What would the tether look like? I have several hand helds and would like to continue to use at least one of them without a tether which would seem to be a bother and cumbersome. This inquiry might be a bit early since the WTIU is not due until August but I am not a fan of using a smart phone to run a train. I have the lionel bluetooth app and don't like it at all and the MTH explorer wifi system is a real bummer.

Unfortunately you, and we, will have to live with it. There will be no more wireless communication between handhelds and TIUs (or WTIUs).
The tether is simply a telephone curly cord, but you'll need the one commonly found between the handset and the phone, and not the one from the phone to the wall jack. It also must have all the conductors in it. Some cheap ones apparently try to get by with using fewer wires inside the curly part.

mike,
Thanks for your response. i was hoping that the handheld # 50-1002 would work wirelessly as the brochure I got with a recent loco purchase seemed to indicate the 50-1038 was the one to need a tether not the 50-1002. The 50-1038 had the asterik by it indicating a required tether.

The 50-1002 is not a current item, but the 50-1038 has the exact same capability. I've had both apart and don't see any substantial difference between the two.
