Hi,

I would like to know, when N.Y.C.S., D.S.I. shops, in East Rochester, N.Y., in 1957 built the 50' double door Early Bird box cars, did D.S.I. use building kits from Pullman Standard, as the bodies of the cars appear to be of the PS-1 design? designshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/jnos363/4568786946/

Thank you,

According to this:

http://steamerafreightcars.com...tcars/nycboxcars.pdf

the DSI cars were of AAR design (see bottom of last page):

AAR DSI 50-foot - DSI proprietary stampings for ends an
d roofs. Produced 1954 - 1964; 2,845 single-door, 4,160
double-door

Here's a book that seems to cover them:

If you Google "NYC Early Bird Boxcars" you'll get a bunch of hits, most are model info, not prototypical info.

Thank you Bob,

This info, which is not too descriptive, leaves one to take it that the cars had roofs and ends stamped at the DCI shops, as their style and the cars were built there as well.
I take it that either some, or most of the body was a PS-1 kit.
PS had that body style, especially at the bottom edge.
And I have a copy of the book and again, it has no detailed description.
Happy Easter,

I don't know if you've seen this, but I ran across it today on another forum:

http://nycshs.org/

NYC Historical Society, they have some free downloadable magazines that may have the info you're looking for.  The mags are listed in the "For The Modeler" section, just right-click on them and "Save Link As" and place them on your hard drive.

Might be worth the price to join, I'm sure someone has exactly what you're looking for.

Thank you again Bob,

I have the Pullman Standard book of when they first came out with their 40' PS-1 box cars, back in 1947.

The book also mentions of PS's 50' and 60' box cars and of stretching 40' cars, into 50'.

They, also mention of kits for RR's to use and that PS would SPECIAL build cars to the specific orders of RR's for boxes, hoppers, open and closed and some flats and stocks.

No, wonder PS produced more railcars, than any other railcar builder and also PS provided railcar building kits for RR's to use.

But, again, no specific detailed info. as to the use of whatever parts that the N.Y.C. needed and/or for what type of car.

I will search that Web-Site, you posted for me, thanks.

Take care,
Ralph-RJL
