I am looking for websites with pictures of the NYO&W 4-8-2 Mountain Class Y locomotives. My O-Gauge layout features passenger trains that served the New York Metro Area in the steam era, and to date I do not have any NYO&W trains. So my mission is to rework a 4-8-2 to look like a NYO&W Class Y.

I think the NYO&W had two Class Y 4-8-2 types, and a light and heavy. Is this so? Also, did the NYO&W have any 4-8-4 locomotives.

Are there any steam era pictures of the NYO&W in Delhi, New York?

Paul Lubliner's book: New York Ontario & Western in color has 3 pics of the Y2....page 15, page 26 and page 27. A Y1 on page 24.

William Helmer's book: The Long Life and the Slow Death of the New York Ontario and Western has the complete motive power roster of the O&W.

There were 10 Ys or Y1s, numbered 401-410.

There were 10 Y2s, numbered 451-460.

Wow....this makes 2 threads where we talked about the O&W tonight!

The heavies were very close to the NYC design... it's a good modeling project. Despite what some "authoritative" books will tell you, the lights were not USRA variants. They actually pre-date the USRA. However, a USRA lignt mountain is a decent starting point for an extensive rebuild.

Want the easiest way to model in 3-rail a steam loco used on the O&W? Get an MTH CNJ camelback and number it for one of the ones leased to the O&W. :-)
