Info some of you may or may not know about the O&W F-3 engines.
The O&W owned (5) F-3 A units and (2) F-3 B units. There was 500 series, and 800 series F-3s. They started life on the O&W in 1948.
The 500 series was numbered 501, 502, 503. The unit were original intended for local freight service. Because of this, the O&W had footboards mounted on the front Pilots and the rear of the engines. Shortly, the NW-2 engine took over the local freight as they were better suited for it. The 500 series F-3s then were moved to single unit local Passenger service even though they did not have steam generators. That is why the O&W built 2 Steam generator cars from the frames of old tenders.
The 800 Series were numbered as A&B unit pairs. They were numbered 821 A&B units and 822 A&B units. These were pretty much used exclusively for freight service. The F-3 were pretty much used on the Southern Division of the O&W and rarely venture up north. One of the additions the O&W made to the F-3 A Units the long single hand rail on the nose of the engines.
