I am trying to upgrade some O scale freight cars and I am looking for brake wheels, stirrups, and grab ons. I have searched the internet diligently for these items and have come up with some decent stirrups and grabirons but I am a bit stumped on brake wheels. Could someone suggest a source for metal brake wheels or sturdy plastic wheels, and a good method of installing them on boxcars, particularly cars where the brake wheel has broken off ?  I have seen some brake wheels with, simply, a center hole. How I would install the brake wheel is a bit of a mystery. I am trying to upgrade my skills. Many thanks.

EBay often has detail items listed;  have bought many there (I am not buying much of anything any more). Sometimes there are "bundles" or "grab bags" for sale at good prices. I have used these to get what I wanted, even if most of the detail parts (let's say) were not on my want list - I still got what I wanted at a decent price. And, you can never have too many parts in your stash - they lead to more projects, which lead to more parts, which....

You skills will get upgraded along the way.

(A small pin or finishing nail can  be used to mount center-hole brake wheels - press fit or a bit of CA glue.)

I get most of my brake wheels from Precision Scale.  There are many styles available dependent upon brake systems and era.

Some get mounted to a brake shaft and some get mounted to a gear box (Ajax brake).  I'd have to see what car(s) you are repairing or upgrading to suggest which to use and how to mount it.  I solder some; I CA & Goo others; some get a combination of the two methods.

Tichy Train Group, Alamance,NC., telephone number 336-329-9038, www.Tichytraingroup.com, has the following items in O scale, grab irons(.020 inch phosphor bronze wire), stirrup steps(black ABS plastic) and brakewheels(gray styrene), prices reasonable. I have purchased the grab irons and stirrup steps, you will need a solvent to bond the ABS plastic to the styrene carbody, Plastruct sells this solvent in a bottle with brush applicator. The items should be on their website. These parts are on a pull down menu under freight car parts.
