Are you aware of a reasonably priced O scale figure set of children? I'm thinking of about a half-dozen figures.

Depends on what your definition of inexpensive is. Try Woodland Scenics, Artista, Model Power, Scenic Express. Thats were all the kids on my layout came from.
I would start with Arttista. Give Dennis a call.

...and I thought the stork brought them.
I bought 2 Artista ones. They are so small I don't even use them. And 'yes', they are 'O' sized. Most artista are undersized IMO. As long as that's all that you use they look great. But undersized, yes.

Your opinion isn’t factually supported. Every adult make Arttista (correct spelling) figure I have is at least 1.5 inches tall — that’s a 6-foot tall man in O scale (1:48). The female figures are just under 1.5 inches.
The children figures, which naturally vary in size, proportion nicely against the adult figures.
Arttista is a fine scale modeling company for 1:48. Anyone interested in accurate figures with some character can’t do better.
The only set of O scale figures of children I've found is a set of 6 by Preiser. It's nice, but it lists for $52--way out of my price range. Are there no other sets?

Compared to what certain other manufacturers produce I agree with you. When calculated on a 1:48 scale though they are fairly accurate. Plus remember that many Artista figures come without bases and even a 1/8 inch thick base adds the equivalent of six inches to the height of the figure. Years ago I picked up a set of seated figures from some German manufacturer. Both the men and women were on the tall side with the males having muscular builds. Next to Artista figures they would probably have looked funny, but both were O scale. With careful placement both worked on my layout.
If you need some kids in their early teens you might want to look at what is available in 28mm. A 6' tall figure in 28mm scale would be about 5' tall in O scale, so a 28mm adult figure would probably have about the same height and built at someone maybe 11-14 years old in O scale.
Plasticville has children in their people set. Although they are closer to S scale real kids come in all sizes.

Figures are tricky'..Take a look at this company. Real accurate scanned from real humans. www.modelu3d.co.uk!
maybe the new Artistta figures are bigger. I haven't bought any in probably 10 to 15 years. I have 4 adults and each is only 1" tall (4'). After that I quit considering them but maybe I should revisit.
Sorry that I was misleading, but my information was correct given my 4 figures.

If you need sitting children, Circus Craft (out of business) made sitting children figures. I've found them at York (White Hall) and at relatively local shows, and can be found in 6 packs like this:
And also in unpainted packages of 100. In fact, forum sponsor Trainz.com has a 100 pack of the unpainted figures on their site right now. I bought a couple hundred that I plan on using to populate my empty Polar Express coaches once I get them painted.

Not a set and not sure if these meet your idea of reasonably priced, but Metal Figures makes some very nice child figures. Some are holding balloons and some are flying kites. https://metalfigures.net/ They are at York whenever that happens again.
There is also Barclay if you don’t mind glossy paint. https://www.barclaycompany.com/shop
