This will be my first track layout-so I know NOTHING! I'm putting up three rail Lionel tubular track running the perimeter of a 11' x 15' room. It will be 7' off the ground up against the wall. I'm running a MTH 2-8-4 Berkshire Steam locomotive using O72 curves (about to order from Menards), the rest straights. Questions I have that first come to mind;

- How far/close to the wall should the track be?

- Transformer? I have mine from childhood (1970's) that ran my standard Lionel train.

- What obvious issues am I overlooking/going to run into?

#1) You can place the track wherever you want but you can’t go so close to the walls that the trains will hit the wall. I would be more concerned about any trains taking a 7’ drop to the floor. I would put up some kind of a guard rail or a piece of wood at least an inch high in case of derailment. That’s just what I would do. Murphy’s law you know.

#2) I would use a modern transformer for modern locomotives with electronics. Your transformer from the ‘70s is great for PW trains or trains from that era but not for modern trains with electronics.
