Hi all,

New to this forum and am curious to know what others do to make a road system. We have a O-Scale fastrack layout that only comes out at Christmas time - no big deal. Does anyone have a detailed DIY instructions on how to convert a car to a motorized version? What scale does one use - 1:43 or 1:48? I have watched a couple of videos on the Faller system but I understand that it is for 1:87/HO scale. The road would just be a large oval on the outside of the track.

What gauge of wire should I use? Would 6 be sufficient or 8? Piano Wire?

What kind of magnets?

Lastly, I am not the most creative (think of bull in china shop) but am also looking at some DIY to create some landscape/platforms for our Christmas Village (Lemax structures). We do not have a lot of room but regardless, I would like to add some additional animation to the layout - lets hope she doesnt change it or I am hooped.

TIA

Clint

General comment: Why is FasTrack so expensive?

EZ Streets are the easy way to go. The Faller system works OK in HO scale but enlarging it to O has issues. It works in HO because the very small mass. The magnet steers the vehicle because the power of the magnet is more than the mass of the vehicle. Scale that up and it becomes difficult to have a magnet that is more powerful than the mass of a bigger vehicle. It can be done but for a temp set up LOTS of R&D to make it work.  !/43 scale slot cars or EZ Streets MUCH less work!!

Not to thread-jack - but a quick question on this topic.

Is there anything to turn cars around (besides curves)?

I was thinking of a straight run - like a highway, with tunnels at each end - where the cars would be turned around and come back out of the tunnel.

With a few cars, you could create the look of constant traffic - without having a loop.

Former forum member Lee Willis wrote two softcover handbooks on the subject. Lee is really into it. The books are on Amazon. Maybe other places. too? Good luck.

You can do a loop with EZ-Streets and an EZ-Streets switch out of sight, the car would turn around and come the other way.  Of course, for my top level, I'm planning on having two EZ-Streets side by side with a loop so the cars will be able to continually run around and pass each other going each way.
