Hello guys. As I get into wiring my O22's I am noticing that the controllers are rather delicate, and the metal contacts tend to float away from the lever, but prying it back into position will break the contact off its base. That has now happened to 3 of my controllers. What is a modern yet still cool way to switch the o22's? What type of switch do I need and can I still get the red and green light position indicators.

You can buy replacement switch controllers for the 022 switches but make sure they are for 022 switches and not 027 switches. Controls from a 6-23011 switch will work as well.
The 027 switch controls will work but must be wired differently then the 022 controls.

The above is the controller for the modern O22 switch, available from Lionel. It works fine with the PW O22 switches.
Solder a stiffer piece of "Contact" brass into the old control and your all set at little to no cost.

rcf,
Go to an up coming train show and purchase as many as you need, the older individual 072 & 711 controllers work the 022's also. If you can find an original set of full metal 711 Controllers they were the best Lionel ever built and never wear out.

Note the big cool looking individual full metal switch controllers in the picture below, they were the best Lionel ever made and still work perfectly today.
Samhongsa used to produce these as an alternative to the less robust turnout switches commonly found. The roller mechanism, shown on top, actuated a momentary closure to activate the throw coils whereas underneath is the separate circuits for lighting. Old school but very fool proof.

If you have the contact piece that broke off, just clean it up and resolder it back in place. It takes a little practice but can be done.
Maybe a bit off-topic, but is there any way to use a dz-1002 controller from z-stuff for 022 switches? I have a mix of Gargraves, Ross and O22 switches and would like to use dz-1002 controller for all, being more compact and lower profile.
I appreciate all the ideas. I am going to look into finding a conductive adhesive that I may have more success with than trying to solder the broken pieces back onto what seems to be a cardboard backing. I also watched a Youtube vid and it seems to me thaT there are impulse switches that have the 3 terminals needed to replace the controllers. Seems like they were being used on a homemade switch control board.

Above is a link to a cool video on how to make your own switch control board. He uses sub mini momentary switches on a plexiglass plate. Only thing is those switches don't give him an immediate visual sign of the position of the switch.
Train tender has part #O22-Rep: repair controller contact + rivet.
Oh man CW thank you!! That's unbelievable.
I looked and it doesnt come up. Not familiar with Tender. Doesnt come up on a Google search either. If you have a link I'd appreciate it.
Maybe I was on the wrong site. Found another at ttender.com but they don't have a search function for their parts. Anyway thanks so much for the tip on the repair kit.

A standard SPDT center off toggle switch is all you need for 022 switch controllers. You can add lights if desired, but small toggles fit control panels much better than the big ones.
(On)-Off-(On) would be the right switch - SPDT center off momentary.
Rob, isn't that what I just said?
Wait, I did forget momentary, that's missing.
Thanks Gunnrunner. I think I will go with the SPDT momentary switches, tho Jeff at Train Tender has the repair kit for the O22 controller and they are 1.50 each. Again, thanks to all.
Here's a decent choice for $2.25 each. They double-pole, but you can just ignore the second set of contacts.

Those would be perfect for RCS/UCS/6019 etc. operating track sections.
