I would like to engage other operators who have bought and used the Cupola Cam by Lionel and offer some of my observations based on my experience.

1) Utilizing the software provided by Lionel the best video results are obtained by connecting directly to one caboose at a time.  Connecting through a WIFI network introduces added data latency which results in lower frame rates and increased signal drop out.

2) When using the software provided by Lionel to connect to multiple cabooses the software only allows automatic connection to the WIFI network which makes it difficult to disconnect the caboose from the network.  The only way I have found to disconnect from the network is to take the caboose out of range of the network and reboot it with the reset button.

3) When using my PC and the software provided by Lionel for PC use, I get a stutter in recordings approximately every 3 seconds.  I think this is caused by the way the signal is buffered prior to being written to disk on my PC.  I have not found a way to make recordings on my PC without the stutter.  This is true in both the direct connection approach and the networked approach to connecting to the caboose.   The stutter is not present in the live video presented on the screen but is present in recordings of that video.

4) I have also found other software which allows connection to the WIFI camera for both my Android tablet (IP cam viewer lite) and my Windows PC (IPCmultiview v1.8.1) but neither of these corrects the issues listed above.

Has anyone else using Android or Windows PC devices encountered the issues listed above?  If not what devices are you using?  My Android tablet is a NEXTBOOK NX16A10132S running Android v6.0.1 and my Windows PC is a Samsung RV520 running Windows 7.

Thanks;

Rolland

My Windows 10 PC gives the following error message when I click on the IPC Multiview.exe software:  "The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP100.dll was not found."  I've no idea what this means.  I have tried reinstalling, to no effect.  I have an AMD Ryzon 5 2600 six-core processor, which is a 64 bit system.

Instead of downloading directly to my PC, I use the Wi-Fi from my phone to record images and videos, then download selected items to my computer.  This allows me to delete them from my phone, saving space.  It also provides a much larger image from the computer.  There are some stutters, but not enough to ruin the video.  I assume the red shift is due to inadequate lighting.  Since there is certainly enough lighting for the naked eye, I don't plan to add more.

Most likely you Miising a Microsoft c++ update or installation

For starters I attempted to load the App "Lionel WI-FI Camera  my I Phone 6. As soon as I typed Lionel WI-FI ; MTH WI-FI DCS popped up. After LMAO,  I just typed Lionel and "Lionel Wireless Camera" showed up. So I loaded the App.

When I opened it I saw the picture of a RR track and then this message, Push Message  no valid "aps-environment" entitlement string found for application.    What?????

I clicked on the + in the upper right and that gave some options. I finally got the camera wi-fi address on my phone and got the camera started. After two loops around my layout I lost the signal and got a message to ask for service. I used the reset button and after more fumbling around I got the camera back. Then I lost it again. That's when I went to trouble shooting and found this statement on page 17. "It is NOT recommended to use this car in a conventional environment. If power is cut for even a second, the camera feed will stop."  So you're doomed on a conventional layout; the train must  be stopped to reset the camera and get it running, so then you hit the direction button and knock it out again.

What would it cost for Lionel to have included a constant voltage circuit?

Not a happy camper.

I have run the caboose cams in conventional but it takes about 11 volts on the track to make the unit work and it is more stable at 13 volts.  As you pointed out each time power is interrupted, the wi-fi goes off line.  It works out ok for loop running on the club layout, just have to make sure to use an engine/consist combination which will keep the operating voltage up without the train going too fast.  Lionel pullmore engines and draggy post war cars are ideal for this duty.  It takes about 30 seconds after the voltage is applied for the wi-fi to be available, so the train runs for a bit before you can connect to the caboose cam.   It is a real hit with the visitors to the layout.
