I  found 3 amazing engines at the train show last Sunday that I would never have considered purchasing them because of the different operating system But I know Lionel would not make these anytime soon.

One was a Sperry Rail car , Second was  U50c UP. And third I will post some pictures is a Milwaukee full scale Little Joe."

All had a 3volt board with PS2.0.

I have to run them conventionally but I  think since I am pulling wire it may be time to "cross over"

The adventure begins!

Question remains, I can get couplers to fire, direction, some crew talk, horn, and bell. Is there a trick to mastering the bell, whistle, whistle... or Bell, Bell, whistle... etc commands via the cab 2? I cannot time anything right, so nothing happens.

What other features should I be able to work until I purchase a DCS system?

Thanks in advance

the two UP engines I own,  you enjoy them very much.    Only one smoke unit on the U-50 for your reference.   The rail detector really comes alive with DCS.

Can't help with your question as I have been running in DCS mode for 10+ years now.  I think you can fire the couplers without DCS and do the "station sounds" with conventional which would be the series of rail detection sounds.  Horn and bell of course too......

Enjoy them!

The bell/whistle sequences for each feature consist of 1/2 second button presses separated by 1/2 second in between each press. I don't know how the Cab2 does the bell/whistle as I'm strictly DCS and conventional. Don't own any TMCC or Legacy engines. I almost bought a TMCC set at the local TCA swapmeet this past saturday-- the guy only wanted $100 for the whole enchilada(and it seemed to be new in box)--- came back a few minutes later and it was sold.

I believe I went to the same show.  A lot of HO and traditional 0-27 1970's 80's 90's the same old cars.  Obliviously I'm into the opposite (standard O modern).  I'm glad to hear that you found something.  There's just not enough to even window shop at these shows let alone debate on what to get between two items.  Just my experience.  I wonder if it's going to get worse (like it an't already) due to BTO.

Hopefully I will be able to run it tonight, its still in its box... I have heard that it has working pantographs that go up and down as the engine changes direction, just like the Lionel GG1's.

The  graphics are sharp.

Considering the investment you have in those three DCS engines, plus the possibility that you might like DCS and decide to buy more, I'd advise you to go ahead and get a DCS setup. I just ordered a Legacy and I only have three or four Legacy engines. DCS and Legacy can be operated at the same time and even on the same track with no problem - the transmission methods are completely different and do not interfere with each other.

J Daddy;

IF you only run one at a time, you can get the desired controls in a DCS Remote Commander. IR tho so you have to point it at the receiver, which is by the track and wired to it.

Startup, shutdown, Speed control, Direction shift, Bell, Whistle, Uncouple front or rear on Diesels, Volume, PFE sound sequence all at the touch of a button or two.

All for the Price of a boxcar. Think about it, I have Full DCS and still got one, it's great for small temp layouts for holidays and the Main DCS can stay on the main layout undisturbed.

It's also a cheap introduction to DCS to see if you want to go full system, which offers more controls.

Good luck with that. I have several MTH electrics with the automatic pans and the failure rate has been around 50%. The mechanism basically involves winding a string around a cylinder and it gets out of adjustment. Fortunately it's not an essential part of the operation. If I remember correctly, my Little Joe is one of two that the pans work correctly.

J Daddy,

The early P2 stuff is great stuff, I put a BCR in them and they work perfectly for ever.  I run both DCS & Legacy and love them both, if you do not have DCS invest in one, purchase Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion book and the OGR Video Guide to DCS.

Nothing wrong with any of the P2 engines, in fact IMO they are more reliable than the P3's.

The 5v boards are less reliable than the 3v and they are not economical to repair. You can't get new replacement boards, the only way to get replacement boards is out of an engine that has been modified or scrapped. MTH makes a 3v setup to replace the 5v but it is expensive and time consuming to install. The 5v board stacks are soldered together and are very difficult to separate. I know one guy who can do it (GGG). The 3v board stacks are plugged in so you can replace the top or bottom board like an old Proto-1 setup.

On the other hand, when they work, they work fine. I have lots of them and only one ever failed. I actually know what's wrong with it; I just don't have time to mess with it. I don't rule out buying a 5v Proto-2 locomotive; I just work the fact that 5v boards are less desirable into the price I will pay.

Question about the 5 volt boards. I was warned to stay away from the earlier Proto 2 releases, why is that?

I can only express my profound envy. Any tips on getting them to work properly? I've fixed a couple of them, but they are a pain to work on because once you have tweaked the adjustment of the string around the dowel, you have to put the whole thing back together before you can test the operation.

The 4 that I have with pans (2 PS2 and 2 PS3) all work perfectly, both conventionally and under DCS.

Welcome to the MTH side of the Control System Force. I have mostly MTH Engines and I am very happy with them. I have replaced all my batteries with BCRs. It takes the worry out of starting with a dead battery. The 1/2 second sequence might be tricky at first but once you get it, it becomes natural.
