Just finished constructing an old Athearn SF ice reefer. Construction was routine until I discovered the kit was missing three of the little door hinges. Does anyone out there in O Gauge land have any of those hinges I could buy? Thank you in advance!

Tom,
I can probably help you out. Let me know the next time you guys are coming to the layout and I'll try to bring them.

Thank you Jay for your reply. I don't belong to a club. I have a layout in my garage here in SoCal and work at OERM in Perris, CA
Tom,
I've always assumed you're the Tom Platten in Fresno. What're the odds there's two Tom Plattens in California involved in O Scale.
Sorry about that.

It is a rare name! Quite a few on the Right Coast. Meet some of them when I was back east in the Coast Guard! Can you send my some hinges?
Tom
I'll look through my Athearn stuff and see what I can find. I have literally, hundreds of Athearn and AN cars ranging from kits to built and everything in between. Thousands of parts too but all sitting in a storage unit about 1/2 mile from home.

Tom:
I may have an extra parts tree from Intermountain reefers I've built. If those will work, I'll dig through my parts stash and see what I have.
I'm not sure what Athearn reefer door hinges look like. But I have a bunch of little brass reefer door hinges. Maybe they are Athearn. A pictre would help.If I have them I'll send them to you.
Thank you for your reply, Al! Unfortunately I have never been able to successfully post a picture on this forum!
All of mine appear to be embossed in the sides. I will look more closely.
The Athearn Reefer hinges are stamped steel with little tabs that are inserted into slots punched in the car side and then bent over to hold the hinge in place. I am pretty sure I have these parts but will not be back in my shop for a week. If you haven't acquired them by then, I will take a look.

Buy three little door hinges.
Should be easy enough to make three identical hinges from styrene, index card or strip brass, emboss rivets with a drill bit, paint to match and attach with ACC.
Matt
I have several styles of these - not the actual Athearn ones as Joe described.
I do have a resin copies of the All-Nation ones if needed.
...or press some Kleen Klay (or equivalent) against an existing hinge then fill the impression/mold with resin, epoxy, Elmer's Glue...etc., repeat twice, paint hinges to match and mount with ACC.

Tom, I will be at the swap meet in Perris 9/8. I can bring the hinges I have. If they are the right ones you are welcome to them.

Matt, it is people like you who are driving small businesses out of work, by suggesting that modelers innovate and solve their problem by their selves.
