Jeff:  I save the 0-27 straights and some curves, painting them either aluminum or black, and simply use them for train shelf track.  The trains never run on it and it only acts to underline your trains and keep the wheels and trucks straight.  Depending on the trains themselves and the wall behind them is what determines the paint color.  For "0" gauge trains, I simply fasten 1"x 4" directly to the wall, drilling a 3/8" hole about 2" through the wood.  Then I drill a 1/8" hole the rest of the way through the flat of the 1x4, take a 3" deck type screw, and fasten the 1x4 shelf against the wall.  Best if you can find studs or joists through the dry-wall.  (For Standard Gauge I do the same thing except that I use 1"x6" lumber.)

Cheap, quick and the trains look natural because the track looks correct for them.

That 027 track is only worthless if you cannot get it clean enough to where the train will run the full circle without stopping. I don't use it here, but have a couple bags full of it. The plus side is it has a lower profile than 0 guage track and it can be bought dirt cheap. Many guys still use it. It won't work with engines that need a larger diameter circle though. There was some of it made in 042 circle too but its hard to find.
