I recently purchased a MTH PS2 SW-9 30-2614-1 ( MTH catalog 2005 ) the sound goes away at times and I've noticed that the ( 2017 MTH catalog ) has SW-9

models coming out this year.

I've thought about upgrading with a PS3 kit with installation conducted by an authorized dealer but there's no way I could do it I looked at the PS3 kit manual.

My question is instead of doing a PS3 upgrade it may be a simpler upgrade by purchasing a new SW-9 like 30-20409-1 MTH 2017 catalog and replacing the new cover or shell with my old engine cover or shell ?

The the old and new SW-9's measure the same 12" x 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" but I know the fasteners could be in different locations ?

Price of a PS3 kit is $200.00 plus labor and shipping could be close to a new 2017 SW-9 $329.95.

Is there a source at MTH that could precisely answer the question about a cover/shell direct replacement on new running gear or model ?

I'm new to the hobby and not familiar with most things involved but have grown to love the hobby over the last year.

Thanks

I don't know for sure, but I would say with a high degree of certainty that swapping the shells should work.

MTH is extremely resistant to new tooling. The tooling is very expensive and they don't update the tools on most models. Same for Lionel.

I actually feel bad for newer people to the hobby that don't realize that the new model they thought they were buying could actually be built on 20 year old tooling with new electronics in some cases.

It'll be the same tooling. All of the SW models probably ride on the exact same frame, so you could even buy one from someone's existing stock and swap it right now, without waiting for delivery of new catalog items.

Trainworld currently lists several SW9s on sale for $249. If you wait a few more days, I wouldnt be surprised if they ran a coupon code sale for presidents day, knocking off a few more bucks and you'd basically be at a wash vs. the upgrade kit.
