We live here about 30 miles west of Asheville NC where the Southern RR used to run bringing tourists and other passengers to Lake Junaluska and its lone resort on the shores of the lake. Supposedly, there were no actual roads early on and the RR was the only way to access the lake from out of the area.

Years ago when the train stopped running someone purchased the old depot and had it moved several hundred yards to this locale on the shore of the lake. It had been restored over the years and changed hands a few times.  Here she sits with Old Glory flying in the cold breeze overlooking the SE end of the lake.  You can see the present RR line in the middle left of the photos. It is a private home now.

And oh what a move.  The station was moved intact.  The mover underestimated the weight by about half as I recall.  The old location is still visable and the platform still there.

The station starred in The Swann starring Grace Kelly many years ago.

Lake Junaluska (a Cherokee chief) was started in 1913 I think as an assembly ground for the Methodist Church and remains so today.  When one arrived by train you then boarded a boat to go across the lake to your hotel or cottage.

Thanks for posting Sam.
