My dad's best friend, Elmer, sent me this photo.  Elmer worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 42 years.  He retired as the Yardmaster of the SP Bayshore Yard in San Francisco.  The date of this photo is July 21, 1956.  This is in the town of San Bruno which is about a 15 minute drive south of San Francisco on US 101.  It shows SP engine #4300, with Train #143, west.  SP locomotive #2345 is on excursion and is traveling east.

What a great photo!!!!

Note that the 4300 (the very first 4-8-2 MT Class) is handling a commuter "off rush hour" passenger train. Also, for those folks that don't believe that steam locomotives ever hauled the high level, double deck "gallery" type passenger cars, there is your proof! There is also photographic proof that the C&NW and CB&Q also used steam on their double deck commuter cars.

I don't think the CN&W referred to long commuter trains as "scoots" back in those days.

You're right as last night I was watching the video Chicago Odyssey II part 1 and they referred to the C&NW commuter trains as "Streamliners"...Milwaukee Road was called "Scoots" and the CB&Q was called "Dinkeys"...I wonder what the RI & IC were called?
