I’m finding it problematic to route older, transformer controlled engines over multiple zones: even though there’s power separation with nylon pins, unintended consequences, such as sudden start ups of other engines holding for the conventional engine to pass through, bells in idling newer engines suddenly sounding, etc.

Perhaps the solution is to keep the older stuff on it’s own loop.

Any suggestions?

When a locomotive or other car with more than one pick-up roller crosses from one electrically isolated power block to another, the internal wiring in that loco/car connecting the pick-up rollers also momentarily bridges power between these 2 adjacent blocks for the duration that the pick-ups are on both sides of the insulating pin.
