What is your "One New Years" promise to your train layout?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
My one promise is to have an 8 x 15 layout with a 6 x 6 train yard extension in full swing by May 1st! Godspeed!!!
Work on the layout with the same amount of effort I put into shopping for trains in 2013.....and to shop in 2014 with the same effort I put into the layout in 2013.
Run more trains in 2014 than I did in 2013!!!!
I promise to pre-order a Scale N&W S1a or Z1a command control locomotive offered by MTH, Lionel, or 3rd Rail! AND I promise to not buy duplicates of any N&W locomotives already on my roster!
Gilly
Not buy anymore engines!!!!!
Well, well.......... except for one GE demo "Little Joe" from Mr. Muffin's new train shop. That's the end of my buying.....maybe, I think. Don
A good one for me would be to stay the heck off that E-bay site....
In 2014, after 31 years without, to have a permanent layout up and running!
Not a promise. This has got to be done. Get my building completed. Site work is finished, two loads of dirt hauled to build up foundation. We had just too much rain in North Carolina and need to get dried out. Not getting this finished prior to Christmas kept two additional trees from being in our house.
buy less,operate more!
Since I started this layout about 10 months ago I have built 90% of the bench work. And I have 90% of the track laid out. So this year health permitting I plan on getting my trains up and running, That means that I need to get some 14ga stranded wire in 6 to 8 colors. and then I need to get back under the layout and finish the painting and start drilling. just to name a few things. So this year I will have this layout up and running.
I made a resolution for 2013, which I am very pleased to report, I accomplished. It was to spend an average of one hour per day, working in the train room. As it turned out, it was closer to two plus hours per day. I also have two forum members helping me with this massive project.
For 2014, the goal is to have all track laid and powered, while maintaining the hour per day goal.
Oh, and I should lay off the bay too.
My promise is to continue to thin out all the train stuff that has been packed away for the last 4 1/2 years and put the money into the layout. Less stuff sitting around makes my wife happy and a more complete layout makes me and the two boys happy.
I too will have a permanent layout up this coming year. I can't promise not buy more trains.
Now that I've regained a 14' X 22' finished room in the basement I can finally start my new layout. My plan is to have all the track laid for two main lines and an elevated urban line with return loops on each end by Memorial Day.
Sell my Custom Built Harley Roadglide and purchase a Ranch Home with huge basement so I can start my layout process eh!
Buy more trains of course.
I've got a few modest goals for this year:
>Attend my first York
>Open up locos and rolling stock that have been stored in boxes for years and get them running
>Sell the items that I don't need or plan on using
>Expand the layout
>Have fun!
Well for me the goals are:
1. Sell off everything that has not seen the light of day. If it has been in storage so long that it is forgotten, out it goes.
2. Learn how to do scenery better to improve the look of the layout.
3. Get to York once if only for a single day.
My son(10 years old) and I are going to take down the temporary layout I made for him 5 years ago and put up something better.
I bought those plastic "horses" at Menards and picked up hollow wood doors at Lowe's threw a piece of in-door-outdoor grass carpeting. It is 9x9.
I have the wood horses to replace the plastic ones which are coming apart, I'll line up the doors so the layout becomes 7x12. I discovered nice short mixed tan short fiber burbur carpet with a foam backing at Menards. It looks real desert-y and gravel-y. I've learned how to lightly drab some colors onto the carpet and it does look pretty acceptable as terrain.
We also want to have something elevated.
My purpose is to keep everything simple, have 2 or 3 separate lines and a small mountain in the corner. It won't look like what folks on these forums can do I can only dream about that, BUT I want to have fun with my son teach him a few skills and run the trains we have.
I am learning how to post pictures feel free to makes suggestions. I am open to help and ideas!!!
Thanks and Happy New Year!!!
My resolution: to keep doing what I do, meaning work on the layout and tweaking it. Over time, say the next thirty years, I will accomplish a lot.
Continue to enjoy the friendships made on this wonderful Forum.
I promise to put away the rubber mallet!
I resolve to not worry about making "progress" on my little setup, as long as I'm having fun.
