I’ve been working on converting a Lionel wood deck flat car to a passenger open air car with double sided benches. I used a template for the stakes and railings to keep everything square and removable. I used 1x6 for decking to cover the existing holes. I used all scale lumber from Northeastern Scale. I was going to post this build on a daily ongoing topic but I felt it would be better this way for future reference. I’ll add to this topic as I continue.

Gene, excellent craftsmanship! Even the handrail miter joints look tight. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Steve. Having many years experience in carpentry, I enjoy these types of projects, just in a much smaller scale.

Nice
What is the prototype for this fantastic car? Your workmanship is excellent. For what it's worth the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, narrow gauge steam railroad, has some of those "open air" cars in almost every one of their trains, which are always VERY well patronized.

A few weeks ago I was watching a video “Allentown & Auburn - Lehigh Valley Coal Co. 126” which gave me the idea to build this car seeing how I have the LV #126 engine. That is the somewhat “prototype” for this build.
Thank you for the compliment.

Just a quick update: Put an aging solution on the deck and used an alcohol stain I mixed to look like pressure treated wood. Painted and added hinges with a makeshift pin lock. Just waiting on the double sided benches to arrive.

I have slowly been finishing up this project. I’ve built quite a few wood kits for the layout but I found these were extremely delicate to work with. I sprayed the ends of the benches and put 2 coats of polyurethane to finish. I was going to use the leftover passengers from the doodlebug project but realized they were too small in comparison to the other o scale people I had, so I ordered 2 sets today to match.
