I've been 2-railing MTH 72-foot Center Beam flat cars. It occurred to me that they also carry lumber loads on 62-foot bulkhead flats. The thing is that 62 isn't a clean multiple of 8 so I needed some input on the following load out options for the Atlas 62-foot Bulkhead Flat with 8-foot lumber loads.

Option A -- Staggered. I've seen cars loaded this way. The load is balanced laterally. Strapping it down might be interesting.

Option B -- Ends Only. This gives an even distribution, but doesn't take advantage of the capacity of the car (and doesn't look as interesting). I've also seen them done this way. The advantage here is that the car doesn't gain as much weight.

Opinions?

Thanks.

Matt,

Been concentrating on the lumber loads for my bulkheads too. Where do you buy your loads,I googled them and didn't find anything suitable for O Scale? Now in HO,there's all kinds of loads. So I decided I'd have to cut my own,but still haven't found any adequate materials to use for that, that don't cost like crazy for very little material. Proposal "A" looks best to me,but it's all centerbeams today,so I don't see any lumber loads for 62' bulkheads anymore on the prototype railroads to reference.

Whatever you decide on is still acceptable to me and would welcome either option on my cars. either option you presented, looks better than the "empty space" on my bulkheads.

Thank you for the photos and info.

As Always,

Normally, I engage in shameless self-promotion of club activities, but in this case I'll shamelessly plug someone's product. The seller on eBay is mirvin1067 and the link to the loads is:

I still occasionally see lumber on 62-foot flats, but it seems to be the odd stuff like 10-foot beam stock or trusses (would love to find some of those). The loads aren't cheap, but they're not that expensive. If you contact him with a quantity order and/or a single branding (it looks like he uses defunct brands) he'll give you a quote. I'm about to order 10 more sets from him to load out two more cars. Just keep in mind that the Centerbeam flat will weigh quite a bit (almost 30 ounces) compared to out-of-the-box when you put 40 loads in the car, but it looks great.
