The argument is moot. I've not yet heard a current tinplate sound that is realistic, that being what I remember from riding and seeing real trains before Amtrak.

It most certainly isn't. They are toys. They're a fanciful representation of the real thing. They don't faithfully represent the appearance of real trains. The sounds shouldn't be expected to be an exact representation either.
(Let's leave the precision to our scale and 2-Rail friends.)

I only like the originals. But, I HATE the smell that the originals have if they are rusted, grease-caked, dirty and abused. Gets on your hands and is hard to get rid of.
I can't abide a stinky railcar.
